The Dawnhounds
by Sascha Stronach
I really loved the beautiful world Stronach created - like industrialism (or of stone and metal) had come and gone and was being replaced with bio-tech. Everything sounded lush and beautiful and I loved the idea of living inside mushrooms that thrive because of you and your family’s energy and life. The premise was really interesting, and the book was beautifully queer. I hope in future book(s) there’s a better grasp of what exactly is taking place in the city (definitely the point). I was really curious about the spirituality of the world, and the unique system of gods that are (or were) a part of the world. I look forward to seeing how they come into play in future book(s) and don’t want to spoil it by postulating here.
Yat frustrated me sometimes. I felt like she had reached a turning point in the story, and in the next couple pages seemed to back step from that. But I still felt like by the end, she got where I needed her to go and acknowledged her single-mindedness that had kept her from seeing broader pictures throughout. All in all, a really fun read and I hope I get to revisit the world soon. (And I want to live in mushroom)
