Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson

5.0

I've never written a review before so I'm sorry if this one is poorly done.

This was my first introduction to Sanderson as a writer and it is obvious to me now why he is considered among the best in the game. This book not only sets-up a trilogy (which I am excited to continue) but also has a satisfying story by itself. This could have been a standalone novel and I would have enjoyed it just as much.

Plot: This story never stops, slows down, or goes backwards. There is always something advancing in every chapter. You will have time to catch your breath after something exciting but there is nothing I would describe as a "lull." Characters are given backstories through dialogue, so there is nothing to take you out of the current story.

The World: The world of Mistborn feels (cliché alert) lived-in. A perfect amount of detail goes into describing the cities, countryside, plantations, buildings, and their inhabitants so you can picture it all clearly. From the red sun in the sky to the ash falling and piling on the ground the Final Empire is as vivid a location as any I've encountered in fiction.

Magic: Mistborn has my favorite magic system since Full Metal Alchemist. Its rules are explained thoroughly enough to understand, while leaving enough mystery to keep you intrigued. You are learning about this system along with the main protagonist, so there are a couple of "info dumps" but it's never overwhelming. And the way this magic system is implemented in the world-building should not be ignored. The hierarchy that exists in this society is a direct result of this magic. I feel like I can't give more details without venturing into spoiler territory.

Characters: Each character in this story is fleshed-out. Personalities and motivations are established for everyone you meet, however briefly. I was constantly going back-and-forth with who my favorite was. Like moral ambiguity? It's here! Like traditionally virtuous? Present! Like questioning if you should root for or against someone? That too!

I would strongly recommend Mistborn, especially for those looking for something a little different in Fantasy.
