Ghostwritten
by David Mitchell
David Mitchell has cemented his place as one of my all-time favorite authors. Firstly, his writing is like candy for me. It is witty and vibrant in ways that few other authors I have read can match. Secondly, each of his characters are brimming with life - very few people can so vividly write such different characters and have all their stories come together. He even manages to write a personality into a "disembodied spirit." The way he can connect different storylines is mind blowing. The littlest details pop up again and again, further tying the stories together into a cohesive unit. On top of all of that, Mitchell integrates philosophical musings, scientific theories, and a plethora of other thought-provoking insights that serve to stimulate the brain alongside several thoroughly entertaining narratives and characters.
Because this work combines elements of many of his later works, Ghostwritten is a fantastic place to start with David Mitchell. I still can't believe that this is his debut novel.
