I didn't expect to enjoy this book--I mean, it bills itself as a tale of a sex addict and tells you from the beginning that you will hate it ... but I really did enjoy it. I found myself laughing out loud so many times from the most surprising bursts of humor in the most unexpected situations. The plot was pretty intense and moved in many unique directions. In fact, trying to describe the construction of the story afterward perplexed me--it was hard to remember how the vivid scenes fit together exactly and how the preposterous situations aligned themselves. Certain plot points seemed really out there. But Victor quickly became an endearing character for me, and I did not find it hard to hope for him during this whole story. I genuinely liked him and several other characters.
True to the author's style, the story had that strong current of subversion and chaos for which he is known that is both unsettling and exhilarating--you never know where his story is going and you don't quite trust him to not piss you off in big ways, but wow, somehow he makes his deeply flawed characters so relate-able and so human. I'm amazed. I give this 3.5 stars. I would give it 4 stars, except for the wild plot journey towards the end.
