What You Wish For
by Katherine Center
I have some gripes with this book, but overall, Katherine Center painted a beautiful world that you don't want to leave, with characters you can't help but love, despite their flaws.
I found the plot to be pretty predictable, but the setting and characters are what kept me wanting more. While Sam was a little annoying at times and needlessly made several poor decisions throughout the story, her quirky personality was fun to follow.
What You Wish For deals with a couple of serious themes, but what resonated the most with me was the idea of purposefully seeking out joy every day. There were some really great passages on that (pg 299 even made me tear up), and I think it's a concept we could all stand to live by a little more.
Honestly, this book doesn't leave me wanting to pick up Center's other novels, despite her popularity and the fact that I did end up enjoying this one. Her writing wasn't quite my style, and I just can't let go of the fact that she misused "ironic" at least three times and overused the term "fair enough" so much that I hope not to see it in writing for a very long time.
But despite all that! This was a really sweet, heartwarming read, and I'd recommend to anyone looking for a few laughs, a few tears, and a pick-me-up.
