I was so convinced I wouldn't cry when I was 300 pages in and everything was slowly but steadily going to shit.
I cried when Achilles held Patroclus' body and wished Patroclus would've let everyone die. That way he himself wouldn't have died. And then I cried some more when Patroclus was forced to stay behind on earth as a fragment of someone he used to be while Achilles was probably looking for him in the underworld. I prayed till the very last chapter for a happy ending and I was not disappointed.
I am also very fond of Patroclus. Achilles was born to be the strongest of the Greeks, a great weapon for war. Patroclus was the exact opposite. He hated hurting others, loved dearly and didn't care about fame and fortune. He didn't want to hold a knife to kill but to save the wounded and help them heal. I loved how when everyone remembered Achilles as a ruthless soldier, Patroclus wanted him to be remembered as a beautiful and kind man. I couldn't help but be in love with Patroclus by the end of the book.
I don't usually like Greek mythology but I made an exception for The Song of Achilles and I am really happy I did.
