The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead

5.0

It’s a very, very, very long time since I’ve been so invested in a character in a book that I simply had to take a quick glimpse at the last few pages to see what happens to her. I couldn’t bear not knowing! I’ve had this book in my TBR pile for ages, I’ve picked it up and put it back down a few times because I was terrified of the content (it is about slavery after all). And it’s all there; the vilest cruelty and violence you can imagine. But then there’s Cora; born into slavery yet quietly sure of her right to be free, totally uneducated but so wise and quick to read people, victim of terrible cruelty yet so dignified and peaceful. This book will absolutely break your heart but you will absolutely not be able to put it down. Get it. Read it.
