Camping with Unicorns by Dana Simpson

5.0

There is nothing better than giggling side by side with your 8 year old daughter. It’s even better when that shared experience is because of a mutual love of books. My daughter and I recently read Camping with Unicorns by Dana Simpson. This was my first reading of a book in this series; however, my daughter has read nearly all of them.

I loved this graphic novel for its mix of childish and adult-like humor. Some of the jokes I appreciated more than she did. Regardless she loved the story all the same. I know this is one my daughter will read again and the book will grow with her as she gets older. The style of humor easily reminded me of Calvin & Hobbes and had me wanting to read more by Simpson. Beyond the humor I adored the vocabulary throughout this novel. I’m a mom but I’m also an educator, so I was happy to see that this novel stretches my daughter’s reading ability and broadens her vocabulary. The struggle is real to find appropriate, interesting books for my 8 year old. Thankfully I’ve found yet another series that she can love and grow into. Thank you to Netgalley and Andrew McMeels publishing for an advanced reader’s copy in exchange for my honest review.
