Memories in the Drift
by Melissa Payne
4.5 stars. Memories in the Drift really hit me hard. There was so much heartbreak between the pages—but also so much positivity and hope. I’ve heard of anterograde amnesia, and I couldn’t imagine living your life not remembering anything after a specific event in time. While some events and discussions were repetitive based on the subject matter, I was absolutely gutted by a few things that were revealed. You see, the reader gets the story through Claire’s eyes, and there are lots of missing pieces.
In this book, Claire’s short-term memory loss was caused by preeclampsia during her pregnancy, resulting in brain swelling and short-term memory loss. That means she doesn’t remember who she saw of what she did YESTERDAY, and even has trouble remembering things within the SAME DAY. Claire compensates through her uber organizational skills by writing everything down, and creating reminders in her phone of what to do next which repeat frequently. I just think how exhausting of an existence that would be, but she is able to get by—and even have a happy existence—through the aid of her close group of family and friends.
The first half was a bit slow, but the latter half made this almost a perfect read. I highly recommend this book!
