We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal

4.0

What to say? I feel this book deserves a 4 star, though I can't agree with main tropes in it.

We have a BA female lead Huntress in a time where women are oppressed sent on a quest to find an object that will bring magic back into the world. Then we have an assassin prince determined to follow his cruel father's orders to obtain the object and kill the Hunter(ess).

The writing and plot and story are impressive and captivating. It felt fresh in the realm of fantasy. The monsters are appropriately scary and each character is true to themselves.

2 main tropes that I'm just not a fan of? Hate-to-love and brooding male main characters

I dislike hate-to-love because I feel as if they are too rushed. Not enough happens between the two spiteful characters to warrant enough character insight into turning away from a hate bond and allowing love to bloom. I think this book definitely falls into this flaw with an almost immediate attraction between the two spiteful characters.

Apart from the hate-to-love, this book also fails in the sense that the lovely "couple" get romantic at completely the wrong times, which warrants a chuckle and an eye roll.

I dislike brooding male main characters because it's not 2005 anymore and I'm not in middle/high school. He was annoying and his reasoning behind why he was a "no mercy killer" fell flat for me. I couldn't help but roll my eyes. It just wasn't my thing.

Setting those things aside, I acknowledge that I really did enjoy this book including its flaws. Sometimes you can enjoy a book even with heavy eye rolls. Sometimes you are in it for the world building, the BA female lead, and the adventure.
