Heartless by Gail Carriger

4.0

I can tell I'm way too invested in this world and these characters because I threw a bit of a tantrum and almost quit the book in the first chapter. I didn't like how things seemed to be going for Alexia. However, our ever practical protagonist, came up with a solution that I could live with (lol) and once fully explained I liked how it worked out for all parties involved.

This book seemed to have just about all the characters experiencing some sort of emotional turmoil at some point and I rather enjoyed seeing their depth. It was also fun and interesting to see another side to some of our more prominent characters. I especially liked the character development of Ivy. So many people underestimate her, including Alexia. And, while she's not as polished, she seems just about as good at gathering information and keeping secrets as Lord Akeldama.

I liked how the mystery in this book had a few different layers but I wasn't all that impressed. I guess I didn't understand what the character involved would have done had they succeeded in their plan. I just don't see how any place would have been safe for them, especially after what happened with Alexia in Blameless, she was hunted from England to Italy.

I loved how despite being pregnant, it was still business as usual for Alexia. She didn't let her "infant inconvenience" hamper her pursuit of solving the mystery and putting everything straight.

I didn't think it was possible but I like Felictiy even less. She just gets under my skin. Overall, Heartless is a solid addition to the series and I would highly recommend.
