Chesapeake by James A. Michener

4.0

As with most Michener books, one goes to school. The sheer quantity of American history encompassed in this book is staggering. The ever present threads that bind the entire book is the endless beauty of the area in combination with the near constant oppression by the white settlers of first, the native Indians and then their imported slaves and later free Blacks. In the midst of it all, Michener also delves into religion, shipbuilding, oystering and the ecology of the Chesapeake. The first 2/3rd's is 5 star material with the final third less interesting. Still - a solid 4 star book!!!
