The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley
4.0
I'm a sucker for time travel stories, though going in to this one I admit I was worried it was going to just be a romance masquerading as time travel. I ended up loving this novel. Yes, it has a romance, which is central to the storyline, but: 1) it works, and is well-written, and 2) the time travel was interesting, and handled in a way I hadn't seen before. And I cared about the characters.
The simple explanation of the plot is that The Ministry of Time is able to time travel, and decides to select several people ("expats") from different eras and transport them to modern-day England to see how their bodies handle time travel, and how/if they can adapt to modern culture. Of course there is much more to the plot, which I won't spoil here, but the main expat, Graham Gore, is based on an actual historical person (he was an Arctic explorer in the 1840s). I found this bit of history interesting, and in fact there are several short flashback chapters from his POV.
It took me a little while to get used to the author's writing style and Britishisms, but I settled in and enjoyed the story, which surprisingly had a lot of humor. I would definitely read more from this author.
