This book was recommended to me by a couple of my favorite 8th grade students, and I did enjoy the first book in this dark, dystopian saga. I thought there were some slower parts in the first half of the book, but once the plot took a major turn about halfway through, I couldn't put it down! Ruby is a Fireblood, and one of the only ones left after the Frostblood conquered them and became the ruling class. After she suffers a devastating personal loss, Ruby is approached by rebel Frostbloods who ask her to help them overthrow their ruthless and bloodthirsty king... but it requires her to come out of hiding and embrace the darkness within herself. Thanks for the recommendation, McKenna & Aseel! This one is probably best for ages 13 and up.
