The authors put a lot of effort into reworking history into some other form, but they don't do a great job of presenting anything.
The pacing is all mixed up, I never know what technical details are going to matter, since we're bouncing around primary characters and times without ever really connecting with anyone. Half of the scenes for which we spend time reading all the alt-history details don't carry any real weight in the narrative. They just further confuse me about what the main point is supposed to be.
