The Latecomer by Jean Hanff Korelitz
5.0
10/10 this book is fantastic. There are characters you love, characters you can’t stand, but the one thing I guarantee is that you’ll be surprised. The author packs sooo much into this book. I almost gave up after the first two chapters but I’m so glad I didn’t. This book was incredible.
Salo and Johanna Oppenheimer live in Brooklyn. Their relationship is unhealthy, but they figure out how to exist together. After years of infertility Johanna finally persuades Salo to do in-vitro. They have 4 healthy embryos, implant 3 of them and have triplets.
The triplets grow up to hate each other. There is denial and drama, secrets and many people living double lives. Most of all there is dysfunction.
Once the triplets are gone to college Johanna decides she wants to have another child and gets a surrogate to carry their last embryo. 17 years younger than the triplets this fourth kid in the “latecomer”.
Besides the interpersonal drama there are issues of race and religion, ethics and politics, conflict and most of all the question of what does it mean to love and what does it mean to be a family.
I LOVED this book!!!!
