Bad Feminist
by Roxane Gay
I adore Roxane Gay— I picked up this book at exactly the right time; I wanted to feel solidarity with other women, be angry about current issues, and ponder whether or not I have the right to call myself a feminist.
The strongest section was on sexuality and gender (though she barely talked about sexuality… slightly disappointing), while the section on politics was weaker. Maybe because the state of the world has taken an even bigger turn since this book’s publication.
How one rates this, I think, depends on what one expects. Yes, she talks about Mary Wollstonecraft and Judith Butler, but no, she doesn’t do that level of criticism. This collection reads more like an anthology of Jezebels articles on social issues.
I love reading Roxane Gay simply because there’s something so comforting about the way I can agree with her. Oh and fuck the people who say she’s not funny.
