So many books from this time period can be summed up with, "Geez, why don't these people just TALK to each other??" The only character who communicates openly is Kate, but she's also an irksome busybody. If people would just say what they mean...well, I guess there'd be fewer books like this in the world. :-)
I enjoyed Billy as a character -- kind, well-meaning, good-hearted, impetuous, and lovable, she was very well-written (though I can't really say the same for how she's depicted in the third book!). However, I really didn't like Bertram all that much, and was kind of rooting for her to get together with Arkwright instead -- they seemed much more well-matched in temperament and interests. (I know it all works out well for him in the end, but still...)
