Bitter Sweet Heart by H. Hunting

5.0

”I feel seen. Whole. Like nothing matters but you and me.”

This story honestly took me by surprise in the best way. It’s intriguing, steamy, and funny, but also has depth and scenes that bring out your emotions. This is part of a spin off series, but can be read as a standalone. Bitter Sweet Heart is a dual first person POV book about Maverick, a college hockey player, and Clover, a college professor- specifically Mav’s new professor.

Maverick’s personality is what shocked me the most, but something I loved the most. He was kind, considerate, thoughtful, introspective, and an all around amazing human for being a young adult. He’s very mature and it makes you see how well he fits with Clover because of it. Clover is at a point where she is finding herself and cannot fathom her feelings for Mav, but is drawn to the caring student anyway. They are both at pivotal points in their lives and seek solace in each other.

“You feel permanent. Like you’re inside my heart and my soul, and I want to keep that. This is the most grounded I’ve ever felt in my life.”

Clearly this book has a major forbidden element with Clover being Maverick’s professor and several years older than him. What I liked about it most was that Helena actually didn’t make the forbidden aspect a reason for the two wanting each other. Although I wouldn’t have cared if she did, she added way more emotion and real life to the story that had more than just their forbidden situation which I loved.

I have read a decent amount of Helena’s books, including the Pucked and All In series that this new series is a spin off of. It has been exciting to see the development of her writing style, plots, and overall character personalities throughout these books. Even with her success, she continues to better her books and I will continue to read everything I can from her.

“How did you become exactly the person I need?”… I don’t know, but I’ll love you for as long as you want me.”

Overall, this is what Hunting does best: a sweet, funny, and steamy story, but she added deeper characters and realistic emotions to really make you fall in love. Mav and Clover’s storyline has plenty of twists and turns to hold your attention. If you read Little Lies (or even if you didn’t), you will without a doubt enjoy this one.
