3.5 stars!
I know we shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but let's be honest, we do. And for me, the cover of this book is just not it and it put me off for ages! When I saw The Works had a reversible cover option I finally picked it up and boy was I surprised by how thicc it is.
We start off meeting Saeris our human FMC in Zilvaren where the humans in her ward are treated pretty poorly, it's scorching hot, water is rationed and the merciless guards execute anyone who steps out of line. I liked the introduction to this world and some of the side characters brought the banter (Hi Carrion) but this is not the main location of the book.
Saeris gets herself into a bit of trouble and ends up transported to the fae world of Yvelia, here is where the main story really kicks in. However, this is also where I felt it got a bit chaotic and messy. This is when we also meet our MMC - Kingfisher.
I enjoyed the beginning, I found the middle to be a bit all over the place and I had lots of questions, the last 100 pages then picked back up again and I am definitely interested in book 2!
I also could not see past 'Carrion' being used as a name, maybe it's foreshadowing of some sort, but it kept pulling me out of the story.
Similarly, the name Kingfisher just felt so unserious and I kept picturing a tiny cute colourful bird!
