Donut Summer by Anita Kelly
4.5
emotional funny lighthearted medium-paced

i am obsessed with anita kelly & everything they write, so when their ya debut was announced i was SO EXCITED. donut summer is everything i wanted (& more!!) from a queer ya romance.

donut summer follows mateo & penny during the summer before their junior year of high school. they have had a bit of a misunderstanding and the two do them spent their sophomore year at odds. penny is a tenacious, determined, and extremely anxious future conservationist with a face full freckles.  mateo is a fairly shy, yet super cool, queer artist with colorful hair that matches their sweet personality. the two of them end up working at their local donut shop for the summer as they try to both save money for their futures & save the donut shop from being bought out by a corporation.

donut summer is everything to me. penny suffers from eldest-daughter-syndrome to the extreme, and mateo is so talented but their family doesn’t fully accept their nonbinary identity, & both of these things cause conflict within the story but it’s so well done. these characters are kids trying to deal with grown up situations and it breaks my heart for them but i love how it was handled. donut summer healed a bit of teenage avery & put 25-year-old avery back together.

this was a phenomenal, 12/10, coming-of-age romance. anita kelly is always & forever going to be an autobuy author for me, & i think they should be one for you too.

many thanks to quill tree books & NetGalley for this eARC!
