Dream When You're Feeling Blue
by Elizabeth Berg
Before reading this book, I read all the reviews on it and was a bit dismayed to see so many negatives. But I just love fiction books set in WWII America, so I figured I'd take the chance.
Throughout the whole book, I just couldn't figure out what everyone's problem was. I loved it! Great characters, very well-defined and strong. Extremely descriptive narrative, the story moved at a good pace. Then...I read the last three chapters. They are three very short chapters, but they do much damage to the story that Ms. Berg had just so carefully told.
I really can't go into what she did wrong without totally giving away the ending, but I was left VERY confused. I mean, I got the gist of what had happened, you could kind of see part of it coming, but the other part?!?! Where did that come from?? I REALLY hope she's planning on writing a sequel (as another reviewer suggested) to explain exactly what transpired between January 1st, 1945 and Valentine's Day 1946. Maybe from Louise's point of view?
All I can say is, it's a shame. The book was so good up until the last 10-12 pages when things got very muddled. I still recommend the book I guess, especially if your into WWII women's fiction, but just be prepared to be very irritated at the ending. If she doesn't have a sequel planned, then I'm just flabbergasted as to why she ended things the way she did. Oh well...I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
