stinggoblin 's review for:
Ghost Eaters
by Clay McLeod Chapman
If you hit rock bottom, would you go deeper? Or pick yourself up?

The prologue was my favorite part! It was a perfect set up for a spooky story and it made me believe I would be adding another five star to my all-time-faves shelf.
I was lied to.
You Cannot Heal In The Same Environment That Made You Sick.
Erin’s whole reason for doing drugs has to do with her limerence with some guy who was in and out of rehab. She’s trying to build the foundation for her dream life but because she can’t tell Silas no her carefully crafted foundation crumbles beneath her feet. I related to Erin’s addiction of gaining the affection and approval from her first love even after their chance has passed, outside of that I felt nothing for her. There wasn’t anything that made me want to root for her. We don't know much else about Erin except that her parents are rich and verbally abusive.
“Everyone's haunted by somebody”
I kept feeling frustrated because I could tell Chapman is a skilled writer, he does a superb job at painting horrifying pictures, but the emotion just isn’t there. There was nothing about this book that made me care about Erin or Silas. I wasn’t cheering for them, and I wasn’t scared for them. Reading this book was like staring at a painting in a museum without a plaque. I could see the story but knew nothing of its subject and it is about as scary as a real estate brochure.
If I was led to be scared for Erin this would be a five star in my eyes. Unfortunately, it is a strong three stars with a side of "lowkey struggled to finish". It is possible I will recommend this book at some point but it certainly will not be at the top of my list.
