Love Is a Mix Tape
by Rob Sheffield
I devoured this in two days. I was drawn to this book by the mix tape concept, and because I like Sheffield's Rolling Stone column. Using real mixes he's made throughout his life, he spans his painfully geeky adolescence in New England to his whirlwind courtship and marriage to a Southern firecracker who shares his appreciation of Pavement and of course, mix tapes. Though I didn't always know the songs, I felt like I was singing along with them, on their road trips through the backwoods of Virginia. I laughed out loud at Sheffield's sharp pop culture commentaries and self-deprecation, and cried as he tells of his wife's sudden death and his subsequent depression. Startlingly poignant, warm, and insightful, this book is easily one of the best books I've read in the past couple of years.
