This was a fun read! I've never read anything by Donna Grant before but I'm when I stumbled across this I knew I had to give it a try. If you like authors like J.R. Ward, Jenna Black, Jeanine Frost, Kim Harrison, Lilith Saintcrow, Kel Carpenter or Ilona Andrews, you'll likely really enjoy this book and the connected books in the series/universe!

Overall, I really liked the writing and the pacing was pretty fast but not really a surprise for a Paranormal Romance/Urban fantasy book. The relationship between Kellan and Denae was cute but pretty predictable lol. Though~ I wish we would've seen Kellan struggle more with his feelings bc of a specific part of his background (no spoilers 🫢). If you want to avoid spice, avoid this series lol! It's got a nice balance of plot and spice but the plot is more spread out across the books vs fleshed out in one.

My biggest complaint about this book is that this was book one in the Dark Kings series, but with all the plot references and characters that weren't really introduced, it felt like it should've been book four. It kept throwing me off lol! And when characters were introduced I found myself wondering who they were and why they were important.

The author said her series are standalone to each other, BUT I honestly wouldn't recommend reading in that order unless you just don't care to know allll of the context.

If you DO want to know all of the things, if recommend this series order:
Dark Sword, Dark Warriors, THEN Dark Kings (Dragon Kings and the Reapers comes after Dark Kings)

That said 🙃 loll it's one hell of a commitment...its almost 20 books (including novellas) BEFORE you get to book one of the Dark Kings series, so enter if you dare! It'll be a fun read all the same, I bet.

If you just want to start from the Dark Kings series, it might be better to just knock out the novellas and maybe Phelan's book (Dark Warriors #7) and possibly Ian's book (Dark Warriors #2)  before Dark Kings book #1 (Darkest Flame).
