The Shipping News by Annie Proulx
4.0

Annie Proulx is just an amazing writer. I grew up around books (my father had literally over 6,000 of them in the house when we counted one time, and that was over 20 years ago!), and he's read pretty much every book he's ever bought. Plus I'm sure a ton he's checked out of the library.

Anyway, I asked him a few years back to make me a list of great authors and books, and Proulx was on that list. The one he recommended me to start with was That Old Ace In the Hole, which was fantastic. I remember wanting to immediately read something else she'd written.

That was several years ago. He sent me this one recently, and while reading the first paragraph, I was once again sucked into the world she creates with her word choice and her unique settings.

While this one wasn't quite as engaging for me personally as "Ace In the Hole," I'd still recommend it enthusiastically. I have a feeling her worst-written book would still reduce you to tears at times, and will make aspiring writers wonder if they should jsut give up.

I honestly don't think I've ever been put into the scenes of a novel in the same way as I have with hers.
