Remina by Junji Ito
3.0
I feel a bit uncertain giving this a 3/5 stars. On one side I'm tempted to give this a much lower score due to the characters feeling mostly one-layered and overall uninteresting (but maybe I'm missing something) despite soaking up so many pages. Though, I don't exactly come to Ito for nuanced characters but more so a nuanced ideas or sensations. So, on the other hand, I could have seen myself giving this a four because I think the idea is phenomenal, even if it did fall a bit short of what I was anticipating.
I think it would bc cooler to get into the psychology of the killers or providing a bit more depth to Remina but I don't know.
The plot and piecework felt decently chaotic with not enough setup or explanation for what was actually going on - but I guess that's somewhat customary for manga. It just felt very quick and I felt like Ito could have let us simmer more in the "cosmic dread." I was definitely anticipating a more solemn moment, where I could reflect and better understand what the fuck was going on but that never really game. This was definitely all gas no breaks. Nonetheless, the beginning was so cool that I'm pretty happy that I picked it up in the first place. That is to say, the book started super strong, but I think was rushed.
I'd be interested to hear people's insights on this book!! If anybody has a unique insight on what the moral motivation or philosophical discussion being had here, that'd be cool. I was pretty lost in the discussion of "why"...
Besides the normal existential and cosmic dread jumbo pack.
