Shadow of the Knife by Richard Ayre
5.0
Shadow of the Knife by Richard Ayre lives up to its genre of thriller. Exciting, dark, violent, and gut-wrenching (literally in the case of the murder victims), this novel skirts around the topic of Jack the Ripper but follows an intelligent path of its own.
Richard Ayre is happy to kill his darlings and write about the effect of loss on his characters. Speaking of which, Shadow of the Knife features a well-drawn cast of characters who pull you along in the chase. My favourite character was Detective Jonas Handy – straightforward, fair, and caring (even if he hides that last one well).
Shadow of the Knife appears incredibly well researched too, embroidering this fictional tale with plenty of historical facts.
So the question is, will Handy and Jarman ride again?
