Journey of Souls: Case Studies of Life Between Lives
by Michael Newton
slow-paced
i hated this book. it somehow managed to be racist, homophobic, overtly sexist, victim blaming, and dare i say anti-semitic in a way that wasn’t even close to enlightening and felt deeply reductive of eastern beliefs that have already been written about in depth. beyond the fact that i found every “case study” to be INSANE (what do you MEANNNNN you mated as fish like beings, what do you MEAN you were a high priest who just killed your own mother) it was ridiculous to me that these works of total fiction were presented as factual accounts and that the methods of getting these people to share these “past lives” were never explained.
quotes i found notable that hopefully explain my review:
RE: Victim blaming
“S: He… had hurt a girl… terribly… and did not rejoin our group…. After a while… not long… he returned to Earth again as a woman… where people were cruel… physically abusive… it was a deliberate choice… my friend needed to experience that”
so victims of abuse are just former souls who were abusive? so they’re born into these situations as punishment for past life behavior and therefore deserve it?
“Perpetrators of harm to others will do penance by setting themselves up as future victims in a karmic cycle of justice”
“Another, more graphic example of a soul volunteering for a terrible assignment was that of one of my subjects who elected in her last life to join… the bodies of Jewish women taken from Munich into the death camp at Dachau in 1941. All were assigned to the same barracks… where my client died in 1943 at age 18 comforting the children and trying to help them survive. Her mission was accomplished with courage”
THIS IS INSANE!!!!!! to take a tragedy like the holocaust where people were forced to their deaths and turn the story into one of a soul’s bravery for CHOOSING to go to a concentration camp is literally evil and so weird to me idk.
“We grow up thinking of ourselves as victims of biological parents and family members whom we inherited without any choice in the matter. This assumption is wrong. When clients tell me how much they suffered from the actions of family members, my first question to their conscious mind is, ‘If you had not been exposed to this person as a child, what would you now lack in understanding?’”
so children of abuse and neglect aren’t allowed to be victims? it’s ok to be a victim and to overcome challenges. this is just cold hearted to me. i can’t imagine reading this as a child of abuse and seeing some boastful, know-it-all asshole ask me what i would have lacked in understanding if i hadn’t been abused.
RE: Racism
“One client told me his last life was planned in advance to end at seven years of age as an American Indian boy. He said, ‘I was looking for a short-burst lesson in humility and this life as a mistreated starving half-breed was enough.’”
HALF BREED?????
RE: Suicide
“Clodees will be disappointed that I bailed out early and didn’t have the courage to face my difficulties”
the language regarding suicide is just… so weird and blamey here
RE: Homophobia
“Homosexuals may or may not be comfortable with their anatomy as humans. When I do have a client who is gay, they often ask if their homosexuality is the result of choosing to be ‘the wrong sex’ in this life. When their sessions are over this inquiry is usually answered”
as a gay person w no discomfort regarding my “anatomy as a human” this is off putting
“Being gay carries a sexual stigma in our society which presents a more difficult road in life. When this road is chosen by one of my clients, it can usually be traced to a karmic need to accelerate personal understanding of the complex differences in gender identity as related to certain events in their past”
CHOSEN?
RE: Sexism
“Dr. N: Someone physically strong?
S: (laughing) No, I’m a woman”
literally doesn’t need an explanation.
RE: Casual abuse that somehow doesn’t count for needing karmic justice
“S: I possessed many women-some willing-others not- and this pleasure added to my expression of physical power.”
casual r*pe reference for what?
RE: Complete insanity
“S: Well, at first it’s always out of focus when the book is opened. Then we think of what we want, the crystal turns from dark to light and … gets into alignment. Then we can see… in miniature… our past lives and the alternatives
Dr. N: How is time treated in these books?
S: Bu frames… pages… time is condensed by the life books”
like ok midnight library ok matt haig
“Not only had they been soulmates in many former lives on Earth, but were also mated as fish-like intelligent beings in a beautiful water world”
ok avatar
i’m pissed off.
