I really like the concept of this book: It was Harry Potter x The Chronicles of Narnia. However, it's primarily set at a magic university and therefore the core characters are 18-22+ , which allows the author to dive in to all of the subsequent ugliness of young adulthood which added an extra dimension.
The Magicians was a fantastic concept - I just didn't find it all that compelling. It was good, but too derivative for my liking. I spent the entire book picking out bits thathad been ripped out of other fantasy books and unceremoniously and crudely dumped into this one. I really should have loved it more than I did.
