The Road Trip by Beth O'Leary
4.5
adventurous emotional reflective

Honestly, this book regained my hope in the “rom com” genre because it was finally an interesting, unique, and heartwarming story that wasn’t bogged down by overused tropes! The aspect of the two exes being stuck in a car together while they road trip to a wedding made me realize how much I liked forced proximity, but once again the angle the author took with that trope was completely of its own! Of course the issues that the characters encountered along the way were a little silly and extreme but I still found it exciting to see how they proceeded. And I definitely did not see the Rodney thing coming!
Typically when books flash back and forth between past and present it can get a little tiresome, but I thought the author did it beautifully to keep the intrigue alive and it really worked for the suspense about figuring out who Marcus was and how he played such a role in everyone’s lives. I found all of the characters very interesting and likable (except Marcus, but that’s the point) which made for an even more impactful storyline. There were deep moments and some of the themes got a little dark, but that’s life and that’s what I look for in books… that they still address life’s messiness and inspire growth.
Truly I was hesitant to read this book because rom coms have really been disappointing me, but I was so pleasantly surprised that this turned into a book that I didn’t want to put down and I was excited to get back to!
