Definitely biased by my status as an ATLA fan but absolutely loved this book. The plot and characterization were super unexpected at first, but really surprised me and kept me guessing in great ways! Kyoshi is a great character to explore (because she’s quite stoic and we get to see her grow), and the variety of perspectives keeps it really nuanced and interesting. I felt quite attached to most of the (brand new!) characters and was consistently moved by the plot threads and relationships affecting them, especially because there are real consequences! Overall this is a wonderful darker extension of the Avatar verse and the stakes are raised appropriately. Loved the additions of LGBTQ representation and will likely be reading the rest of the series! (netflix avatar wishes it was this good in a YA way!!!!!!)
