A POSTCARD FROM EARTH: And Other Tales of Science Fiction by Andrew Barber

5.0

I'm primarily a nonfiction reader, but lately, I've returned to my fiction roots to explore new perspectives and stimulate my mind. That's why discovering this book felt so timely!

I enjoyed science fiction in my youth, with Fredric Brown and Isaac Asimov as my favorite authors. "Postcard" reignited my passion for hard science fiction, showcasing Barber's style, which blends elements of both writers. I appreciated the wry humor reminiscent of Brown in stories like "Why the Robot Rebellion Failed" and "The Martian Rescue" (both "In the Spirit of Bulwer-Lytton"), alongside the deep humanity and thought-provoking themes characteristic of Asimov.

Barber's short stories are well-crafted and paced, each feeling like it could be adapted into a science fiction television episode. "Snips and Snails" stands out as a great example. Each story prompted thoughtful reflection.

My favorite was "Surrogate," which I found profoundly poignant and ripe for adaptation—perhaps even into a novel first. I am eager to learn more about the characters.

I hope Barber continues to write short stories and explores a path as both a novelist and screenwriter!
