Molly Moon & the Monster Music by Georgia Byng

2.0

This was so incredibly disappointing as the finale to such a fun series. Throughout the Molly Moon books, her magical powers have been the least compelling thing. What really makes the books stand out is Molly’s commitment to being kind and the love she and her friends and family have for one another. This installment definitely still had a little bit of that, especially toward the end of the book, but for the majority of it, everything that makes this series endearing was completely gone. The whole coin thing made no sense and was just frustrating to read about. I am all in for my girl Petula, so Molly being mean to her kind of ruined the book. One thing I do appreciate is this at least being semi-connected to the prior book, even if I wish it had a completely different plot. Also, Molly losing her powers was just disappointing, and for this being the series conclusion, I really missed seeing the sweet interactions between Molly and everyone (Rocky, Petula, Micky, her parents, more of the orphanage children, etc.). Some of the backstory we got about Dr. Logan was interesting—if a bit random—and I adored the last chapter or so of the book, but it was still just generally missing so much of the spark of the books. This could’ve had potential in an alternate universe, but it was just way too out of character and far too many random new magical things were thrown in here while simultaneously disregarding everything else that had been built up to until this point.
