Popular Music in Evangelical Youth Culture by Stella Lau

5.0

An excellent discussion on late 20th-/early 21st-century evangelical and Charismatic popular music "churches" that, evidently, were designed to have as little to do with an actual gospel message as possible (including dancing to popular, sexual, and hedonistic club music of the time as a means of worship). Rather, these 'liquid' (as opposing to 'solid' and liturgical) churches were dedicating themselves to appearing cool to young people. Feels absurdly cult-y and actually sickening reading how the music was led to invoke trances, raves, and signs of "feeling God's presence", though Lau, the author, was incredibly professional and loving in working with her participants.
