A Fatal Obsession by Faith Martin
4.0

A Fatal Obsession is the first book in a British police procedural series that I just discovered. It features an intriguing pair of sleuths – probationary WPC Trudy Loveday and coroner Clement Ryder. Ryder is an extremely clever retired doctor trying to hide his symptoms of Parkinson’s. Loveday was foisted on a boss who doesn’t particularly want a female officer working for him and is much cleverer than many of her male colleagues. When Ryder asks for a police officer to give him the right to interview people about an old case, he is fortunate to be given Loveday.

I found the mystery fairly crafty and I did not guess what really happened before the big reveal. Both Loveday and Ryder are interesting characters, and I enjoyed their chemistry. I liked that Loveday is still learning and can take an elbow to the eye but keep fighting. She is a good cop and a good listener. I particularly enjoyed a scene where she hops on a bike to get somewhere in a hurry. Ryder is capable but has a secret to hide. It could be interesting to see how that plays out in future books.

The series is set in the 1960s in Oxford, England, which makes it even more appealing. I look forward to reading more books in the series.
