Eragon by Christopher Paolini

3.0

Honestly, the first time I've read this book was at maybe 10, 11 years old and it had me in a chokehold because it was cool and had dragons and fighting and it was my introduction to fantasy basically. Now, re-reading this at 17 I've come to realize my love for this book may have all just been nostalgia. Eragon as a character is honestly insanely plain, like to the point of where if you gave me a paper with a brainstorming prompt bubble of personality attributes I wouldn't be able to put a single thought down, (which sucks because he's the MAIN character.) The other characters like Murtagh were more fleshed out, but still very cliche, and I wouldn't mind it that much if Eragon himself was remotely entertaining as a character. In terms of the writing itself, he uses big words sometimes but the sentence structure and descriptions were kind of flavorless. And the way the story was built was just a total bore, it was just the characters waiting for their cue to talk for two pages straight to propel the story forward. But knowing a 15 year old was the one who wrote it, it's not that surprising and he still did a decent job at producing a book (although it's mediocre). If it was a food it would be a lightly salted chicken breast. I'd recommend it for 10-12 year olds, its wording and storyline is simple enough to follow and they might not mind the blatant self-insert that Eragon was supposed to be for Paolini.
