Blue Remembered Earth
by Alastair Reynolds
There is a first time for everything - last night I finally decided to give up on a book by one of my favourite writers: Alastair Reynolds. The book is "Blue Remembered Earth". His books are rarely an easy read, hard science fiction rarely is, but it is nearly always satisfying. The intrigue of the concept and depth of world-building always makes up for the lack of gripping storytelling in this subgenre; it's not for everybody.
This is a whole different ballgame from his other stuff. Low on concept and technology, it's a bit of an adventure mystery thriller. The problem is books in this category need to be page turners. I feel he didn't quite adapt his style in a way I felt appealed to me. That and the fact that this is the first in a trilogy where I'd already decided I wasn't interested enough to read any more made it pointless carrying on.
