I have no knowledge of pool, nor of competitive sport, however I was drawn to Tevis' first book after reading 'The Queens Gambit'; this knowledge was not needed to enjoy the novel. The writing in 'The Hustler' was perfect, thoughtful and deliberate with the plot being generally fast-paced. The ending left me wanting more, as did the final interaction with Sarah but I think this further added to the tense vignette that is the novel. Some aspects of bigotry have not aged well however being aware of this before reading the book, it was not too offputting. I plan to read more of Tevis' books
