The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor by Jake Tapper

5.0

I had this at four stars, until the epilogue, which made it a five star book for me. There is no question about the bravery of the men serving at the various outposts and bases in Afghanistan - but what the book really showed was the monumental lack of good decision-making, politics, and overall incompetence at the highest levels that put these men in the position in the first place. Everything from where to place the base to not providing enough support to expensive equipment that routinely malfunctions. Add to that the lack of support for veterans once they return home, and it makes me infuriated about where our tax dollars go and how we put lives in danger for ego, politics, and simple inertia of decisions.
