The Year We Fell Down by Sarina Bowen

4.0

This book was such a great read!!

Our two main characters spend most of the book either in crutches or in a wheelchair. Now, I'm not sure how accurate the wheelchair representation is, but I can speak to using crutches. A few years ago I hurt my knee pretty badly (broke the bone and sprained the ligament) playing Quidditch (yes, Quidditch). I was on crutches for three months and physiotherapy for almost a year. Also, I had a knee brace that I called David. So I really empathized with what Hartley was going through and some of what Corey had to deal with too. I can definitely say that Crutches Math 101 really is a thing (also, I'd like o take a second to thank the kind bus driver who was really patient with me when it took me forever to figure how to step into the bus for the first time in crutches and still added a "take your time" to let me know it was okay). I'm all good now, tho I decided to quit my very short-lived Quidditch career. All this to say that, for me, Hartley's struggles were very realistic.

Onto to the characters now. I loved both our main characters and I loved how their relationship progressed. Just like in Taylor Swift's "You Belong With Me" music video (and basically every teen movie in the late 90s) I kept yelling at my kindly trying to figure out why a great guy like Hartley was with such an annoying person like Stacia. Thankfully, the author did give us a reason and I was surprised when it made sense. I didn't agree with it, but I understood it. So I couldn't be too mad at it.

I'm so glad our main couple opened up to each other about their "shit to shovel". I love reading about people who are willing to be vulnerable with each other.

Definitely recommend this book!
