Bridget grew up in a broken home and when her parents divorced she moved in with her dad. Unfortunately her dad was quite abusive and hit Bridget on a regular basis.

Bridget’s relationship with her mother wasn’t great either but she knew there wouldn’t be abuse in the home, so she vowed to move back in with her mother. She started joining her mother and her partner Mark on their wilderness expeditions.

When Bridget is sexually assaulted by her stepfather’s friend. Her mom tells her to get used to it. Bridget is raped by a date.

Bridget runs into her aunt’s old boyfriend Steve and they begin a relationship. Even though he is 15 years her senior. Bridget starts river raft tours under the guide of her partner.

Bridget moves on to guide tours out of the Zambian river in Africa. While there she learns so much about the culture and herself. She tries to leave Steve after having an affair with her co-guide, but he guilts her into staying saying he “rescued” her from her old ways (ie her old life of abuse).

Bridget returns to California and makes contact with her dad. It is a fresh start. He apologizes for the abuse. Bridget and her dad both get cancer and it brings them closer together. Bridget learns that her father has a learning disability and was never properly assessed, which led him to lash out and be abusive. She makes peace with her father and was with him when he passed.
