God, this book is gut wrench. It’s a perfect example of how your circumstances shape you and how generational traumas can carry over from parent to child.
This is my first Toni Morrison novel and I’m in awe that it’s her first.
The way each one of the family members in the Breedlove family turn into bitter, self-loathing people is such a heartbreaking reflection on internalized racism. Morrison is a master at calling out our society’s white privilege and shows us all how it can destroy the self-worth of POC in this short book.
If the density of classic lit is not your thing, The Bluest Eye is a good place to dip your toe in and try again. The prose are artistic and the message is powerful.
