Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler

3.0

To be honest, I disliked this book for a good chunk of it. I thought Min was pretentious and the whole “not-like-other-girls” thing kind of annoyed me. But when I got to pages 335-338, I was somehow transported back to high school me, heartbroken over a boy I thought loved me the way I loved him. Those pages felt like the diary entries I angrily scratched out whilst sobbing over the fact that I wasn’t good enough and that, somehow, I was a fraud for thinking I ever was. At that point, I understood Min completely. The way she spoke, the way she acted; it all felt so real. There was something about her self-awareness at the end that made the book for me. And that’s why I’m giving it a high rating. I’m quite surprised too. 3 stars.
