I Wish You All the Best by Mason Deaver
3.0

This was a very wholesome and much needed book for anybody who’s struggling with identity!

For a debut novel this was really good, super easy to read and it wasn’t anything cheesy. I personally couldn’t relate much because I’m not a fan of a high school setting but the message in this book is really important <3

Here we follow Ben, who was kicked out of their home after coming out to their parents. Ben ends up staying with Hannah, their estranged sister. After this whole fiasco happens, Ben meets Nathan Allan, who takes them under their wing.

Nathan was so cute, I love how supportive he is of Ben and how great of a friend he was throughout the whole thing. His conversations with Ben are also super cute!!

As for Ben, I just wanna give them a big hug:( Nobody deserves to be kicked out just because you’re being who you are, but sadly that’s quite a universal truth that people go through.

I do wish this book had a bit more internal monologue, sometimes the dialogue takes up two to three whole pages. But that is more of a personal preference in my case. I just wanted to know more about Ben’s feelings without being told, I want to be showed how they felt.

There was a bunch of texting too, which I guess suits the theme since this is revolved around a high school student and their friends. But I personally don’t really like seeing too much texting in the pages if there’s some chance for more narration.

I would still recommend this to people though. It can be very relatable not just for enbys, but for anyone who’s been shunned due to their identity. I also will probably pick up this author’s other books and see how they’ve grown. So read it! <3
