Scattered All Over the Earth
by Yōko Tawada
tawada's projects would seem to fix on the notion of adaptation. in this case, after a global catastrophe causes certain countries to "disappear", our heroine, having fled the "land of sushi" wanders northern europe, creating a hybrid language in order to communicate. without really trying, she attracts a horde of followers who go in search of her mother tongue.
their quest explores the ways in which people communicate in order for culture to survive and notions of truth are exhausted.
probably best i end here.
in this case, words fail: mine, not hers.
