Purple Hibiscus
by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
I learned about this book in a Vanity Fair article about up and coming African authors, not realizing that it is considered Young Adult fiction until I found out where it is shelved in our local library. That said, it's got some pretty heavy themes for YA--family violence, politics, religion--which make it a more complex read. Having lived in West Africa, I really loved all the little details about food, music, culture, etc. Wish I had a teenage version of me to recommend the book to!
