London Rain by Nicola Upson
4.0

As playwright/author Josephine Tey sits in on rehearsals for a BBC radio broadcast of one of her plays, London prepares for the coronation of George VI. Her friend, Scotland Yard inspector Archie Penrose, is bisily preparing for the immense security effort around the coronation. But other emotions than excitement over the coming celebrations are building up to a darker outcome...
Even as Josephine and her love, Marta, seek a way to arrange for a way to be together, a marriage is falling apart. Years of infidelity are leading a wife to the breaking point. But even she has no idea how deep her husband's betrayal has gone. It will take Josephine and Archie both to unearth the secrets that lead to murder just as the new King is crowned.
I enjoy this series' combination of the imagined life of detective author Josephine Tey with real historical events and figures. Tey was by all accounts an intensely private person, so much of her fictional life is built on what we've learned about her since she died too young of cancer. I look forward to more books in this series (and to learning about whether Archie's relationship with Bridget--see Book 5 of the series--will go south when she reveals her own secret).
