Shanghai: A Novel by Yokomitsu Riichi

Read this book for a university course on Shanghai's history. It's worth giving a shot if you'd like to learn more about nationalist movements in early-20th-century Shanghai and its diverse inhabitants. This is very subjective as its inclusion reflects historical reality, but I wasn't taken by the narrator's (and likely the author's) Japanese ethnonationalism and copious amounts of disgust towards cosmopolitanism, nor was I impressed by his choice to dramatize this through the violation of sexualized female characters.
