Age of Ultron by Jackson Butch Guice, Brian Michael Bendis, Kathryn Immonen, Christos Gage, Carlos Pacheco, Al Ewing, Paco Medina, Amilcar Pinna, Brandon Peterson, Dexter Soy, Matt Fraction, Matt Kindt, André Lima Araújo, Bryan Hitch

2.0

Age of Ultron is a bit of a mess. It has an over reliance on boring 2 page spreads that make it difficult to follow the narrative at times and don't add much. The story itself is all over the place and truthfully the only interesting parts are after the issue 5 mark. Until then, we get heros standing around and looking defeated, brooding on how the world has gone to hell and almost everyone talks and acts the same, regardless of who their character is. I wish I would have liked this event more. It had some interesting ideas such as Ultron taking over the world and ruling it as well as
Spoiler Wolverine and Sue going back in time as well as the rest of the avengers going into the future
but the ideas don't go anywhere and apart from the attempt to stop Ultron
Spoiler with time travel
, nothing is in the book for longer than part of an issue. The twist at the end of issue 3 and into issue 4, I thought, was clever and well done but it's overshadowed by the blandness of the heroes and the wanton killing of many of them.

Had the focus been more on how Ultron actually brought about the Age of Ultron and conquered the future as opposed to just seeing Ultron sentinels kill heroes left right after, off panel, wiping out most of humanity, this may have been a much better event. As it stands, its only purpose seems to have been to
Spoiler introduce Angela
and start the Hunger miniseries in the Ultimate universe. I'd say still read it, but don't purchase it. It's not bad, per se, it's just boring and unfocused. I'd say check it out of the library or if you have Marvel Unlimited read it there but don't buy it unless you find that you can look past its flaws (or, you know, you find it for like $2). If you want to read this type of story done a bit better, read Hickman's Avengers and New Avengers series, it has the luxury of being able to take more time to tell a more coherent story.
